Shin’ichi made more than twenty woodblock prints depicting the same bird; namely, the crested ibis. Thirty examples are included in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. By the 1980s there were no longer any wild birds of this species living in Japan. Its last stronghold had been the island of Sado which was Shin’ichi’s home. He drew the ibis’s shape in a true-to-life way but was often creative when coloring its surface features.
